An update on PostAWeek2011

I’m not entirely sure how many regular readers I have. Encouragingly, I’ve got a good few subscribers and seem to get the odd re-tweet. Therefore, if you’ve been here before and are not my mum, my fiancee, my mate Jeff or me, thanks for coming back.

Right or wrong, clever or stupid, I decided to participate in WordPress’s PostAWeek2011 challenge back in January. The premise for which is simple – write something every week and post it on your blog. Easy, yeah?

Originally, I had a crack at PostADay2011. If you imagine PostAWeek2011 being a kickabout in the local park, its more frequent sibling is akin to playing against the current Barcelona team. On your own. Naked. Tied to an old man.

It’s hard.

So, obviously, I gave up.

Posting something every week has actually turned out to be a little easier than I thought. The briefest of conversations, a second-long glance at a situation… even biscuits. Inspiration is literally everywhere.

For that reason, I recommend that you give this a go. It doesn’t matter how confident you are at writing, or if you’re speling is as bad as mine – trust me, you will feel better for letting it all out occasionally.

As WordPress say – express yourself. Start a blog. The world is a better place with more words.

Are Apple afraid of iOS?

Mac App StoreYesterday, the Mac App Store launched and I have to say, it’s pretty darn good.

It just makes sense. Why not follow the iOS model and allow users to quickly purchase software without the need for fiddly installations from DVDs? Software is suddenly more accessible, more attractive and, as shown in the case of Aperture, cheaper.

But why? Why have Apple done this?

I have a sneaking suspicion they’re a little frightened of their own creation: iOS itself. Its rise to fame has been nothing short of meteoric and dependence placed on it at home and in business immeasurable. This has caught many by surprise. Perhaps not least Mr Jobs.

A month or so after purchasing my iPad I realised that I hadn’t touched my MacBook Pro for anything other than studio duties. Before the iPad, my trusty laptop would always be on hand, ready for a quick web surf or email, but now it had almost cemented itself to my studio desk, being asked only occasionally to run Logic. A waste, no?

It’s no coincidence that Apple’s newest piece of hardware, the redesigned Macbook Air, is at the centre of all App Store advertising, either. This is a product which is difficult to place in their lineup. The iPad is there for quick, mobile internet access, while their range of Macs (portable or otherwise) are there for traditional computing-purposes the iPad isn’t up to. So why make such a fuss about the new Air? Larger battery, thin as ice, ‘instant on’… its almost an iPad itself…

Aha!

Apple are clearly frightened the Mac is slipping out of the spotlight. The mobile computing boom triggered in no small part by iOS and its devices is drawing people away from their computers quicker than you can say ‘there’s an App for that’. Apple needed to do something to remind them of the heavy grey box collecting dust on the desk…

…enter the Mac App Store.

Clever.

Just what do you spend an HMV voucher on?

HMV

HMV: Top Dog no longer.

I woke this morning to the news that HMV is closing 60 stores throughout the UK after a significant slump in sales (more).

I should have foreseen this, as it was only a week ago I trudged into my local HMV, clutching the £10 voucher someone bought me for my birthday. Which was last October.

This was my second visit to the music/game/you-name-it-we-got-it store and I was met with the exact same problem. What do you buy at HMV these days?

Music? No, iTunes exists.

A book? No, Amazon and iBooks exist.

A DVD? No, Play.com exists.

A computer game? No, Game Station exists.

A JLS calendar? No. Just, no.

Suffice to say, I walked out empty handed, again. There is a very real chance the voucher will spend the rest of its sorry life nestled in my wallet behind the dog-eared National Insurance card.

As someone I follow on Twitter eloquently put it this morning: “…what I most miss about buying cds and records is the artwork, reading the credits, etc. Music is so fucking disposable now…”.

And it is. What a shame.

…anyone want to buy a £10 HMV voucher?

Tron Legacy – pretty dull

Jeff Bridges at the Independent Spirit Awards ...

Jeff Bridges. The real one, without the strange CGI lips.

Heavy breather? Sinus problems? Perhaps he had a bad cold.

Nope, he was asleep.

Like me, the guy to my right had ventured to the cinema alone. We were kindred spirits. I was off work, trying to fill my last day away from the grindstone with something a little different. Maybe he was doing the same. Or perhaps he truly was a loner.

Regardless, he’d spent over £7 on a cinema ticket only to fall asleep.

Perhaps it was the film. Tron Legacy is, after all, a bit like watching an attractive screensaver for two hours.

As explained yesterday, I went to see it almost solely off the back of Daft Punk writing the score. This was a silly idea.

The problem is, the film’s soundtrack could only have been put together by Daft Punk. It was made for them. Not using the duo would have rendered the entire project pointless. Their fusion of synths and real strings was absolute perfection. But why is that a problem?

It fit too well, to the point where it was almost non existent. It wove itself so tightly into what is a technically impressive, yet dull film, that it simply became part of the shiny, pretty backdrop. That in itself is an achievement, but one I wasn’t really expecting. I was expecting it to make the film, being a long-time fan of the French masters of low pass filtering and having waited so long for their return.

Their cameo was amusing, if a little contrived, but even that did little to dampen my disappointment. All I was left with was a plot so narrow and unexplored that it sent my fellow singleton into the land of nod.

Worse still was the CGI sculpted head of the young Jeff Bridges, in this instance playing the baddie (I’ve already forgotten his name). Quite how a film costing in excess of £200m was unable to make it resemble anything other than a poorly operated glove puppet is beyond me. Sooty is more menacing.

Moans aside, it has to be said that it’s a stunning film to look at. Special effects rarely impress me these days, at least not like they used to. There’s rarely a Jurassic Park moment in today’s expensive blockbusters and while Tron Legacy isn’t quite on a par with that in terms of unique wonderment, it is rather pretty. The 3D is also nicely judged, adding a real depth to the film while not at all distracting.

Verdict? Wait for the DVD, but go and buy the soundtrack now; its better without the film.

Daft Punk made me go to the cinema

Daft Punk

Daft Punk. See? They're real people.

I’m heading to the cinema tomorrow to finally see Tron: Legacy. And pretty much for one reason only.

Daft Punk have written the score.

I’ve not seen the first Tron film. Therefore, I have little interest in the history, nostalgia, plot or re-imagined youthful Jeff Bridges. No, I’ve simply heard some of Daft Punk’s work on the film’s soundtrack (including the excellent Derezzed) and want to see its effect on the video game-inspired sequel.

I’ve had a think and I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve been to see a film based solely on the soundtrack. What’s different this time? Why not wait until it appears on Sky? Well, the little I’ve heard of the legendary french duo’s cinematic knob twiddling represents some of their best work for the last ten years. After the slack Human After All, all I’ve had to satisfy my craving for the pioneers of filtered french house is their Alive live album (which is, in fairness, superb). But new material? There’s been zilch. Waiting for a Daft Punk album is exciting for me as it was for my dad eagerly awaiting the next Beatles release.

I shall report back tomorrow (still keeping this postaday2011 thing up) on the success of seeing a film based purely on the music that accompanies the pictures. I have a horrible feeling it might be a silly, silly idea, particularly after watching Kermode’s review.

I’m also heading to the cinema alone – another first – therefore I’ll report on just what a lonely experience it’s bound to be.

Still, better than joining the legions of depressed people heading back to work. That’ll have to wait until Thursday.

…and all that was left was a bench.

I didn’t know Kev. He could have been a great bloke, the sort you’d lend your car to. He might even have invented something important. Like the bath plug, perhaps. On the other hand, he might have been a right so and so. Perhaps even a murderer, or, worse still, an estate agent.

That’s unlikely, however, because he was obviously nice enough to deserve his own bench, sitting next to the reservoir at Sywell country park.

This got me thinking. Would I want the only remnants of me to be a bench? An object weary dog walkers plant their muddy, sweaty backsides on? I’m not sure I would.

Also, the bench was engraved ‘Kev’s bench’, which leant it a somewhat reserved air. Perhaps Kev isn’t dead. Maybe that is literally his bench which only he should sit at?

Just to be safe, I didn’t sit on it, but it’s left me wondering what I’d like my name to adorn once I’ve departed. I think I finally have the answer – just to the right of the BBC HD channel ident. Then everyone can enjoy me, in glorious high definition.

Ghost scene of my youth

Mendip Park, Duston

Mendip Park, Duston

It may not look much, but the relatively uninspiring patch of grass in the photo to the left is the preferred walk of choice for our border terrier, Eddie. Fully enclosed and relatively dog poo free, it’s the perfect place to let an occasionally mischievous pooch loose.

While trudging through the sticky mud left by the December snow this morning, I glanced at the scene captured in the photo. This small patch of parkland, surrounded by housing estates and a tennis club also provided the background to much of my childhood, for it was here, at Mendip park, that we played football near enough every day after school.

Five-a-side, one in goal, two vs two, world cup singles, headers and volleys – it all happened here. We honed skills few of us would ever make use of in adult life, kept ourselves relatively fit and, most importantly, away from the TV and ZX Spectrum.

Fifteen years on, we walk the dog regularly here and it only occurred to me today that we very rarely catch site of the new generation. Those that should be taking our place, laying down jumpers for goalposts and replaying that twenty-five yard free kick smashed home from the champagne zone on last night’s Match Of The Day.

Where are they?

…and don’t tell me it’s Call of Duty. Elite 2: Frontier was just as addictive when I was a lad.

A post a day? I give myself until February.

An email from WordPress dropped through my inbox this morning, pointing me in the direction of this.

It grabbed my attention because I really should be making more of this blog. Its progress is a slow trickle at the moment and it really should be motoring along; I have so much I want to write about but, more often than not, talk myself out of doing so. I’m normally too busy (read: can’t be arsed).

This is silly, as there are so many methods of posting to WordPress. Via your laptop, iPhone, iPad, SMS… I think it’s even possible to send your post to WordPress by just thinking it and bashing your head against the computer screen, but I’m not sure on that one. Regardless, wherever you are, posting a few thoughts is stupidly easy and I will therefore endeavour to exploit these technological conveniences.

I’ll give it a go. I can’t guarantee it’ll yield many interesting posts (in fact, I know it won’t), but it’ll at least give me something else to aim for in 2011.
